(article updated 10/12/2009) How often we get emails that in essence say " How can you make a good laptop if you can't make a good website?" Our simple reply to this is "What?" Perhaps lets rephrase thier question, "How can I be sure your Auto Parts company sells good auto parts if you cant make a good website? Doctor, how can I be sure you have a great neurosurgery practice if you cant make a website? Mr. Homebuilder, how can I be sure you are a good home builder or handy man if you cant make a website?" We are not trying to be funny here, only trying to highlight that great looking websites are a business into themselves. And having a website so you can sell your business, does not in any way mean your business is making websites. M-Tech laptops is a company devoted to making the best laptops, testing them, finding ways to make them do your computing better, faster and do things you were told could not be done." This is what M-Tech Laptops does for it customers, we never advertised that we want to build your website and really what kind of crazy advertising campaign it would be if we said, "Buy our laptops, because our website is great." Or, here is a good one, "of course our laptops are good, just look at our website." Wouldn't you prefer we spend our time working on your next laptop rather than our next web page? We think perhaps the customer is not aware of just how expensive a truly great looking site is. It is far from a one time job or expense. Most sites have limited web pages because they only have to have enough pages to sell you the product. A few more pages for support. If you have spent any amount of time on the M-Tech site, you know that there are hundreds of pages. Most are pages devoted to explaining technology and how it effects you. A great looking professionally created website would cost almost a hundred though sand dollars. That is if we had a website creation firm create and maintain each and every page. To save you money we struggle to do the site ourselves.
For Fifteen years now M-Tech has been wowing people with what is widely considered to be the fastest laptops in the industry, and considering the type of personal service you get, we do it at remarkably low prices. How can M-Tech devote hours and hours of personal service to each customer and sell the finest laptops made and still beat our main competitor (Alienware and Voodoo Now owned by HP) on the latest laptop technology available. Our competition has always charged more than us. They use inferior laptops and they do not give you the personal service, advice and support that M-Tech does. Why is this?
We have a much lower overhead than our Alienware, Voodoo and others. For example, while DELL/Alienware are investing $5,000 to $10,000 and more per web page (not site) we have steadfastly refused to spend your money on things that look nice but do not get you a better laptop. Let's face it: in a retail situation, every dollar we spend is one you have to pay back to us by way of higher consumer prices. So that fancy $10,000 per page website is costing you several extra $$ out of your pocket. One of M-Tech primary philosophies is not to encourage the customer to spend money on anything that does not directly benefit the laptop or its performance. A snappy website would only benefit M-Tech. While we see on forums people actually saying they would not buy a laptop from a company that cannot design a good looking website. We respectfully reply..."What the heck?" What does one have to do with another? We sell laptops not web designs, M-Tech not being able to make a web site has exactly what to do with the laptops we sell? Are we asking you to have us build you a website? NO! If that was the case then we would whole heartily agree with you. Do not ever ask M-Tech to help you build a web site, we make fine laptops but our web site is less than beautiful..
Would you pay us several hundreds of dollars extra if you knew that the money went to the website maintenance and not your laptop? Probably not but that is what you are paying for with each purchase when you buy from a company that has a outstanding website. To believe otherwise is naive. If you just cant buy from a site that is not beautiful than that is your privilege, You certainly are paying for it. However, do not criticize those who do not wish to spend money on anything but the laptop itself.. If you want to pay 80% for the product and 20% for the site then you of course have many options but M-Tech is here for people who want the best laptop an don't care to pay a penny more for the website. What do you want to actually pay for, the our laptop or our marketing. Let us know, if you really want to see a better site and are willing to put your money were your mouth is, then send us your money, we will apply it to the site and give you full credit. that is mote than you get for your money when you pay extra with our competition..
The Ugly Website Revelation
Does this mean that we here at M-Tech Laptops have no desire for a beautiful website that screams "buy from us"? No, not at all. It just so happens that M-Tech only employs people who know and understand laptop technology. We here at M-Tech have made an astonishing revelation: apparently, when someone is consumed with a love for mobile technology, it also somehow steers them genetically away from any hope of being artistic or having anything that remotely resembles web design talent. This of course was shocking news to us but somehow was also a comfort. We could rest easier knowing that every employee here just couldn't design a website to save their lives and it wasn't their fault. It's just some genetic malady. Kind of like having a beer belly. I don't know why it is this way, but it isn't my fault.
The Website you see today when visiting us was designed by someone much better than us. they won the contest you are going to read about. While initially it was just beautiful, we here took control of it and started entering the information we felt you needed. Needless to say it now looks as if someone ruined a perfectly good website. The problem is we don't want to sell you a laptop just because our site is great looking. We want to overload you with useful information, educate you in mobile technology and leave nothing left for you to have a question about. Sounds great, but all this information requires us to to work on the site ourselves and then before we know it we have the most informative site on the web and one of the ugliest. So we encourage you, to read the contest below and se if you can design a website that looks good and yet our technology junkies here cannot screw up. Think your up to the task? We doubt it because you have no idea how adept we are at laptops and how inept we are at something remotely resembling artistic talent.
So in celebration of this scientific discovery and in response to your groans of dismay over the eclectic look of the M-Tech web site (mostly from those of you who have talent). M-Tech is announcing (again) the "Your Website Sucks" contest. Entrants to this contest must design a (FrontPage, Expressions Web) a showroom page, and a laptop page template and some type of page we can just cram all sorts of useful data and helpful hints into.. All entrants will have the work judged by your peers (since it sure isn't going to be us - we design websites that suck). We will tally the votes (both of them) and the winner gets to have us use his/hers work...free of charge! Wow, isn't that great? Come on now! You didn't expect us to pay for this? Recall why our website is so ugly to begin with? Cheap management! Low Laptop prices! We pass the savings on to you and all those other great catch phrases that really mean "if you don't want to pay more for your laptop than we can't spend more for the website"
OK, now that your starting to get over the shock of giving your time and efforts away for nothing, let us make this wonderful gesture. Whoever is the lucky person to win the contest will have his companies name splattered (we use this term loosely) all over our website in recognition of your talent. While we know that money would be the preferred award, let us remind you that M-Tech is in the top 10 percent of trafficked websites. (according to Alexa) If you have ever wanted to get some recognition of your talent or perhaps build a resume for future clients (that do pay), this would be a great opportunity. Thousands of unique visitors a day will see your work. Some may want to send you money for you to do the same for them. Or, if your work is really really good, maybe they will just want to send you money because of the awesome talent you posses. Yes, we doubt that as well, but listen: did we mention that this will help us keep our prices the lowest in the industry? Think of the favor to mankind you are doing by helping us assure future generations of laptop users that affordable technology is available to them - all because you gave of your time and talents to the M-Tech cause. This could mean a Nobel Prize for your work toward bettering humanity. (Can we stop now? It getting deep and starting to smell.)
So if this interests you (and why wouldn't it?), then get to work in designing a website look that you think will say "buy from us" to future purchasers of laptops.
Send us an e-mail at jerry@mtechlaptops.com with your desire to enter and we can fill you in on the preferred HTML editor for you to use. Or you can convince us why we should change to yours. Please put "website contest" in the subject line. Don't put "sucks" in the subject or message body or the spam filter will nail you to a piece of plywood in the parking lot and throw darts at you.
Thank you.
P.S. Some have asked to enter the competition without actually reading the whole page. We know this because they ask what they would be paid or given by way of merchandise if they do win he contest. Hello, the point is to get a site others can benefit from and not have it cost you the customer anything. So to be perfectly clear, other than your name in print, giving you credit, there is no prize. If there was, then we could just spend that money right away and get the page designed. Of course then we would be right back to why we don't have a nice looking site to begin with. We don't won't you to have to pay for it. Anything we pay for you the customer end up having to pay for.
